I really like that quote too Becky. "Why would you study some place else?" You're right that space is important. And what is in that space is just as important. Hopefully it's a comfortable environment conducive to learning and there's friendly staff who can help.

Your point about libraries providing the only opportunity for people is well taken. Sometimes the library is the only internet access people have either at school or in public libraries. The information is out there if you can get on the web, but some people can't. Libraries provide that opportunity.

I really like how the campus media tech guy talked about hte computer labs on campus. "there are a bunch, but I'd suggest the library's lab. know why? because they've got a staff. who can help you. with all sorts of things. like research, and paper writing, and even some computer issues. why would you study some place else?"

Also, I think although we don't have a monopoly on free access to info. We still provide the only opportunity for some people. Maybe not on all campuses, but at mine, we've still got a chunk of students who don't bring computers. Or are commuters and we provide a space for them to be when they aren't in classes. Or need to do group work. For us, the physical space is still important.
